I was watching an ant taking a leisurely stroll up my wall the other day, in one of the most indirect ways imaginable.
This creature was zigging and zagging, but still progressing upwards. And I thought how beautiful that was, going from point A to B, by way of points G and Double Z, and not even being bothered at all.
The journey reminded me of words written by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings:
“Not all those who wander are lost.”
Think about how exciting life would be if everything you’ve ever wanted was satisfied immediately and directly. Probably pretty boring.
There’s joy in learning, overcoming, smiling back at yourself in the rearview mirror – “Look how much I’ve grown!”
And wonder about all the things you bump into along the way, those who fascinate you, those who enrage you, those who bring out passion in you.
There’s definitely a time for direct A to B action, but nothing keeps you in the present moment like wandering. Truly going with the flow and letting energy that feels good lead you to the next point.
Have you ever walked along the beach with the goal of walking, but you wouldn’t be able to tell anyone of the rocks on your path, the animals that scurried by, or the way the waves seemed different than the time before?
Being present in this way affects your entire life. You miss fewer signs that appear before you in your journey, you connect with your body answering questions you have in your mind, and you might even realize that it lit you up so much when you bumped into point Double Z, that point B is no longer where you want to be.
